Are the 1937 and 1945 serials "Secret Agent X-9" and "The Black Coin" public domain?
If so where would I get a legal transfer. VHS,DVD?
Can a company copyright a transfer? I don't want to get in trouble for getting a restored
(hence copyrighted) version.

I'd like to do some of this copyright research myself, so I don't have to keep asking.
What would be the best way to get started researching the legal status of old films.

Try this first. You can usually find info on movies made from 1978 on, some earlier films for renewals. It doesn't always have information about ALL movies, but if you have a big list of movies you'd like to upload and aren't sure about, this will thin the list out some. Then check the rest out in this forum by posting a list of what's left here. NOTE: when checking movies at the USCO website and no information comes up, DO NOT ASSUME IT'S PD. It could still be copyright. Always check here before uploading.
